Shoving Off and Setting Sail

“Ships are safe in harbor, but that is not what they are built for.”

–John A. Shedd

An introduction, and a plan of sorts

In 2018 I decided, having been an IT professional for years already, to go back to school. It’s been a journey. As I wrap up that chapter in my life, hopefully leaving network administration and help desk for the fairer pastures of… database administration and debugging, I’m hoping to get some of my thoughts on paper. Virtual paper, at any rate. I expect I will post infrequently, and the topics will be random. Still, I hope someone will find something useful in them.

I’ve been carrying a small journal for the last few years. It’s battered and falling apart at this point, but it’s served its function well enough. Whenever I get that snippet of a song lyric or idea for a painting or a piece of electronic art, a thought about current events or a nagging software project idea that just won’t go away, I’ve written it down. The hope, as always, is that at some nebulous time in the future I’ll have the time to attack them and bring something real into this world. In the mean time, they wait. I’m hoping writing about them, giving them a journey and a real world to live in will be the push I need.

A little bit of personal background, before I let this sit for the night: I’m a musician, a diver, a computer scientist, a sailor, a photographer, a half-assed mechanic, and a tinkerer of the first order. I love to explore new realms, learn new skills. I fully expect to find myself gushing one week about the benefits of stochastic search, and discussing the parallels between aquariums and global climates the next. At the very least, I hope to entertain.
